finback chair
This chair was speculatively designed as one-in-the-eye for the modernist in me and also as part of my series of 'epitaphs' to the towering elms of my youth.
All the joints in this chair are hidden within the wood. We use stainless-steel threaded bar, secured by boat builders resin, to ensure a lasting and robust construction. This technique allows us to dispense with the traditional cacophony of nails and under-frame, relying instead on the intrinsic strengths of timber. It also allows us to give full throttle to the sculpting skills of the maker.
Two of these chairs were commissioned for the permanent collection at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge in 2005.
